Clearing the Air: Asthma and Indoor Air Exposures
Published in Hardcover by National Academy Press (April, 2000)
Authors: Institute of Medicine (U.S.) Committee on the Assessment of Asthma and and Institute of Medicine
Average review score:

Authoritative review of asthma and indoor air issues
This is clearly the authoritative review of asthma and domestic indoor air quality. Not only does it present a (nearly) complete summary of indoor air issues and asthma, but it describes the degree of certainty with which it draws conclusions. While I might have been more interested in some acrylates and urethanes, etc, I think if you are interested in this issue you must read this source.

Comanche Dictionary and Grammar (Summer Institute of Linguistics, Publications in Linguistics, #92)
Published in Paperback by Summer Inst of Linguistics (January, 1991)
Authors: Lila Wistrand Robinson and James Armagost
Average review score:

I'm not aware of a better Comanche language dictionary.
When I first received this dictionary I immediately began to look up several words my grandmother had told me. I was able to locate them easily even though the Comanche spelling scheme uses several peculiar characters (e.g. my grandmothers spelling of "posa tibo" was found under "po?sa taiboo?"). Since then I have used this book as a reference on a daily basis. It is an invaluable resource and a "must have" for any serious student of the language.

This Dictionary is based on the research of the late Elliot Canonge, who is well known to Comanches for his work during the fifties and sixties. That work resulted in Comanche Texts (1958), several beginning Comanche readers, and a collection of Comanche hymns. Canonge's research for this dictionary was checked in consultation with fluent speakers of Comanche and is probably the most comprehensive source available today.

The grammar section at the back of the book is difficult to follow and apparently intended for the professional linguist. I believe a much simpler explanation of Comanche syntax to be possible, but that is really a minor criticism.

Combining and Modifying SAS Data Sets: Examples
Published in Paperback by SAS Publishing (August, 1995)
Author: Sas Institute
Average review score:

Very Good for the Intermediate to Advanced User
This book is best suited for intermediate to advanced SAS programmers who need to merge or otherwise combine or modify data sets. Although the MERGE command is quite simple, it can be quite tricky if not fully understood: Merge commands may combine your data in unexpected ways that won't always show as errors in your program log. Thus, it is extrememly important to know exactly what the program is doing.

There are numerous helpful examples that are divided into programming "goal," "strategy," "input data set(s)," "resulting data set," "program," and "where to go from here" (references to further discussions of the topic). As shown in the following brief excerpt, readers will benefit by knowing some programming terminology: "Goal: Within the same data set, look ahead from a variable value in one observation to return the value of the same variable in the observation that immediately follows it."

Chapter 1. An Introduction to Data Relationships, Access Methods, and Techniques for Data Manipulation.

Chapter 2. Combining Single Observations with Single Observations.

Chapter 3. Combining a Single Observation with Multiple Observations.

Chapter 4. Combining Multiple Observations with Multiple Observations.

Chapter 5. Manipulating Data From a Single Source.

Chapter 6. Utilities and Functions.

The last two chapters emphasize modifying rather than combining data sets, and have a great deal of useful information (e.g., adding new observations to the end of a data set, simulating the LEAD function, adding a new variable that contains the frequency of a by-group value, converting character and numeric variables, producing equal-sized random samples, etc.). PROC SQL is sometimes used in the programs. The 197-page book has many well-organized examples, and includes an appendix on error checking and a useful index.

Commandos from the Sea: Soviet Naval Spetsnaz in World War II (Naval Institute Special Warfare Series)
Published in Hardcover by United States Naval Inst. (October, 1996)
Authors: Iurii Strekhnin, James F. Gebhardt, and Yurly Fedorovich Strekhnin
Average review score:

Everything you wanted to know about WWII Soviet commandos
This is a pretty good book since it provides a good description of what Soviet commandos actually did during World War II. If you can get by some of the European-style bravado and the Communist titles, such as Hero of the Army, and that sort of thing, the book is worth reading and provides valuable insight into the work of these people.

Essentially, this book covers the Soviet commandos (all sailors) on the Danube River in areas largely occupied by the retreating Germans and in the Crimea area during the time the Germans held control there.

The book is broken up into short "adventures" or missions, each of which is exciting enough to keep the reader glued to the pages. Some of the missions are incredible but yet believable since they do make sense. What these commandos do, or did, is somewhat like the work of U.S. Navy Seals.

The book is a translation, so it does have a stilted tone to it; however, the narrations are so well done descriptively, that you get the impression it must be a beautiful work in Russian. And it probably is.

The book is easy reading, very revealing, and exciting. The characters are very real and act in a Euro-macho manner, making the reader chuckle at times at their naivete.

Common Man, Mythic Vision

A new look at a favorite artist
I was given this catalog recently as a holiday gift. I didn't know much about Shahn's late works. This catalog provides ample illustrations, discussion of key late paintings, as well as considers the importance of Shahn's ethnic heritage and involvement with the Left during the 1930s. A great look at a favorite painter.

The Complete Internal Revenue Code: January 2000 (Complete Internal Revenue Code. January)

Must have
Well it is what it is, the tax code. There are several options for finding the code, CD, internet etc. There is no substitute for having it on your bookshelf. At this price you can hardly be without it. Think of all the time your internet conection is down, or how slow it can be when all you need is one little bit of information. This book comes in very handy. You all know the content its just a matter of getting to it. This makes it convienent and available.

The Confucian Transformation of Korea: A Study of Society and Ideology (Harvard-Yenching Institute Monograph Series, No 36)
Published in Hardcover by Harvard Univ (December, 1992)
Author: Martina Deuchler
Average review score:

Comprehensive, well researched
Deuchler's book is a wonderful examination of the social changes brought about by the adoption of Neo-Confucianism as the ruling ideology of Korea from 1392 onward. Despite her dense writing style (fewer authors pack as much information per page), the work is fascinating and highly readable. My only major complaint is that she focuses almost exclusively on the upper classes, although to be fair, evidence from the lower classes is largely non-existent. I would have also liked to have seen more diagrams, but other people may not find this a problem.

The Conservation of Artifacts Made from Plant Materials (Getty Trust Publications: Getty Conservation Institute)
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (March, 1991)
Authors: Dale Paul Kronkright, Ruth E. Norton, and Mary-Lou Florian
Average review score:

The Conservation of Artifacts Made from Plant Materials
Not a book for the light reader (principally because it weighs too much!), but nevertheless an excellent reference book on the conservation of plant materials. Good books that cover this topic are extremely difficult to find, but this one not only presents its information in a clear, easily comprehenisble style (not something always associated with conservation reference books) it also has some of the best diagrams I've ever seen in a book of this type. As with all good conservation books, it not only covers conservation methods, but also deals very thoroughly with the initial manufacture of the artifacts and how this effects the preservation and restoration of the work - the sections on weaving are particularly good. Despite the fact that it was written in 1991, this book still provides valid methods of conservation and preservation for all plant materials.
